Introduction
Underpinned by a transformative $480-$500 million investment by the NSW Government, the Powerhouse Ultimo Renewal will establish a world-class museum that will significantly contribute to a vital design, technology and cultural precinct in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.
The Powerhouse Ultimo renewal is part of the Government’s once-in-a-generation investment into cultural infrastructure to cement Sydney as a global cultural destination. Bringing together adaptive heritage reuse and contemporary museum practice, the renewal will see Powerhouse Ultimo deliver new galleries dedicated to design and fashion alongside, expanded support for creative industries and renewed spaces connecting and integrating the Powerhouse with the Sydney CBD. The Design Competition was managed by CityLab on behalf of Create NSW, Powerhouse and Infrastructure NSW, alongside a jury of architecture and cultural industry experts. The winning design was selected by the jury for: - Vision for the renewal of the Powerhouse Ultimo site and the broader precinct. - Distinctive museum experience internally and unlocking of the site – creating generous public connectivity, access and civic spaces. - A proposal that presents a family of buildings which, through the varied representation of similar external materiality over time, reflect and respect the heritage and ethos of this innovative institution. - A meaningful connection with Country that is realised and embedded in all aspects of the physical architectural, functional, landscape and urban response.
Winning Design
“The design approach centres on making subtle moves appropriate to the site – at times via gentle intervention and repair, at others through ambitious moves that enable the site to be ‘unlocked’ to provide a distinctive and highly functional museum experience.”
