Introduction
Engaged by the KIWA Working Group, the ambition of the project is to develop a proposal for a globally unique platform for Māori and Pacific culture in the Auckland harbour.
This project envisions a place that brings together the enormous capacity of the contemporary creative Māori diaspora into a building that is unique to the world; not only a ‘signature’ building but a ‘signature’ programme.
CityLab collaborated with the Working Group on a series of workshops and over six months, to develop a proposal for a place where the spiritual and the worldly meet, where cultural memory and contemporary creativity collaborate, and where environmental knowledge enriches knowledge of the arts, at a time when climate change threatens the future of Pacific Island life.
While the proposal for this intended site did not proceed, discussions are ongoing with the New Zealand Government for a KIWA centre of Māori and Pacific Culture.
