Introduction
A group of Australia’s most awarded architects was invited to participate in a competition to breathe life into the Indiana Tea Rooms on Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia.
Gathering ideas from community engagement, the Indiana Tea Rooms Design Competition calls for a reimagining of the site that would optimise communal functions. The brief encourages creativity, seeking to open and activate the Indiana site and provide a destination that services locals, appeals to visitors and brings people together.
The winner of the competition is Durbach Block Jaggers Architects with Ohlo Studio and Aspect Studios. Their proposal is composed of a beachside pool, an arts and cultural hub, an amphitheatre, a boardwalk, a designated function space, additional food and beverage options, upgraded amenities and increased accessibility.
Winning Design
“The theme of ‘two islands’ that drives the winning design’s primary strategy and expression is a creative reinterpretation of indigenous and local topographical references, resulting in a unique, characterful and organic architectural and spatial response that is both compelling and memorable.”
