Introduction
This competition invites design responses that deliver an artistically informed playground, which may include a playable public art sculpture or custom-made landscape playground.
The Western Playground in Queens Park is a rectangular space measuring approximately 350 sqm, bounded by a curving low bluestone wall. The existing playground is considered a medium play space that attracts and caters to infants and juniors with visitors/users from Moonee Valley, neighbouring councils and broader Melbourne. It is adjacent to an historic cottage known as the Old Caretaker’s Cottage, which operates as a café.
Bordering the Playground area and Cottage is a forecourt and exposure to well maintained open space. It is an ideal site for Council to deliver a landmark playground for community use, enhancing tourist attraction to this highly frequented regional park.
Council now wishes to breathe new life into the playground, with a design that offers both great play value and strong artistic merit.
Responses are invited that build on the Council's commitment in 2025 to The Playground Project, encouraging designs that are imaginative and culturally meaningful.
To participate in this Competition each Competitor must:
• include a key personnel member that has designed a play area and/or a public artwork.
In addition, the Lead Creative must demonstrate:
• no less than three years of practice, evidenced through an ABN that is no less than three years old.
• experience in delivering projects with a budget of no less than $500k.
