The NGV Architecture Commission offers a unique opportunity for any Australian architect to propose a compelling design idea for presentation within one of Australia’s great civic and cultural spaces – the Grollo Equiset Garden at NGV International.

The design competition brief requests that the successful concept should be capable of performing multiple functions, with a ‘default setting’ that activates through audience participation.

The NGV Comission 2019 opened in November 2019.

The winning proposal, entitled In Absence, invites contemplation through its engulfing form and voids above. This commission was the recipient of the 2020 National Award for Small Project Architecture (National Architecture Awards), the 2020 Kevin Borland Award for Small Project Architecture (Victorian Architecture Awards), and the 2020 Small Building of the Year (Dezeen Awards).
