The Competition
The City of Charles Sturt engaged CityLab as the Competition Advisor for the transformation of the public open space, Henley Square. The Competition process assisted the council in finding a design which maximised open space with the jetty and the coast line in a way that allowed for community interaction and also heightened the existing strength of the coastal surroundings.

The aim of the Henley Square Urban Design Competition was to develop design solutions that will better manage the needs of the local community as well as the visitors, without compromising the existing character and values that make the Henley Square precinct unique.

The Brief
Through the development of design criteria that emphasised the importance of maximising ocean views from all angles, while also emphasising safety and pedestrian accessibility. The resulting design had to includes mixed use integration that balances commercial viability while preserving the community atmosphere of the space.

The Henley Square Urban Design redevelopment is now complete. Visit Competition Updates for more.
The Winner
It was noted that the team composition represented a reliable and impressive array of talents. The winning submission is commended for the playful approach to the  plaza, lawn and promenade elements.

The linear north/south promenade is here subtly transformed into a loop of circulation around the lawn and is  seen as an effective means to activate the plaza and generate an increased focal point for the square.
